1984

Last week I read Geoege Orwell's "1984" for the first time. I could of course write a book about that book, but I'll spare any readers AND my kids, who would rather have my attention. But I do have to quote one passage that startled me when I read it--it was Deja vu--I'd heard these words somewhere before:

"But always--do not forget this, Winston--always there will be the intoxication of power, constantly increasing and constantly growing subtler. Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face--forever." (my emphasis)

Anyone else recognize those words? Anyone else creeped out?

As I said, I could write a book on "1984" now that I've finally read it. It has strengths, and likewise weaknesses. But if you've never read it either, why not pick up a copy and give it a once over. I got mine free off paperbackswap.com, or I'm sure the library would have a copy you could check out. It's definitely worth the reading, though you might not want to do it as a family read aloud or a bedtime story!

And let's all please keep our boots on the ground and off of each others' faces--or throats.

  1. I'm not sure that is a good book for the very pregnant to read! LOL I read it in high school and reread it a couple of years ago! Very creepy and puts you on your guard!

  3. Yeah, it's on my shelf. I'm finishing Animal Farm first. It's a quick and easy read, a mini 1984 with animals, it seems. The weird factor for me with Animal Farm is that I've read so many Freddy the Pig books by Walter Brooks, and Freddy and the animals on the Bean farm are awesome, the total opposite of those on Animal Farm! If anyone wants a great set of books to read that will having you laughing and smiling, instead of freaking out, read the Freddy books!! They're terrific!!!
